Obviously Beefheart's later work is lightyears removed from his early work. Shiny Beast is way more accessible than I expected from listening to Trout mask Replica, which is arguably a brilliant record, but which I've always found difficult to sit through. Next up, his last record before he disappeared into the Mojave desert, Ice Cream for Crow.

I think the good and bad thing about dEUS is (or rather was) how much they incorporate/become their influences. I say was because, well, I think the last album lacked that and it also missed *spark*. I can't get over how patchy that last album was. Lyrically it was just extremely bland. But, anyway, yeah, they definitely took a lot from Beefheart (and a gazillion other bands/musicians).
It's also hilarious that I noticed that they made an error in the media in regard to dEUS performing in Antwerp for the first time after 11 years. No fucking WAY, I think it's about 8 years ago. At the Monty. I think. Shit, I'm getting old. :-(
